A Witch In February
A Month For Lovers
A FEBRUARY INVOCATION
White cap and bonnet, bowed to the ground,
A carpet of moss in which she is found
Laying with blanket of leaf, twig and bark,
Ivory flower, Spring’s first spark.
Snowdrop, you march between tributary roots
that the witch slips and trips on
as they catch on her boots.
She seems not to mind
For she knows more than most
that farewells are being said to Winter’s cold ghost.
Brighter days are foretold,
we expect them each year,
but there’s something quite magick
in this floral pioneer.
After the slow, dark start to the year we find ourselves in a month that starts to feel a little ‘different’. Although it is still Winter (in the Northern Hemisphere) there are little glimmers, clues and signs here and there, that hint at brighter days and Spring. I’m not one to wish a season away (unless its been a particularly scorching summer) but by February I find myself craving a little bit of light, brighter mornings filled with birdsong, and the sight of new growth in the trees and below them.
After a restful January, we can start to poke our heads out of our burrows and emerge. I like February, the month is short and there is always the chance of a little freckle of snow here and there to keep the magick of Winter going. As for magickal matters, we can feel our energy building a little bit more. Just as the sun is staying out longer a little more each day, so too can we show up a little bit more with our practice, and start to look at our hopes and dreams for the year ahead.
I talk a lot about manifestation or have done over the past few years online, but really there’s only so much that manifestation can do, it’s the magick, the spellwork and the ritual that does all of the heavy lifting. As fun as it is to dream, sometimes we need to roll up our sleeves and do the work.
This month I want to look at how we can harness the energy of the shortness of this month, and also glimpse into the magick of the leap year (the next one is in 2028!) how we can identify the difference between ritual and habit, take a peek at weather magick, and some journalling ideas… but first shall we take a look at what there is to see in the plant world right now?
Let’s wrap up warm and head on into February…
